I have been self employed since 1975, working initially as a jobbing gardener turned tree surgeon & landscape contractor. This served as an apprenticeship & gave me the necessary experience which combined with my passion for plants allowed me to develop my garden design business in the early 1990s.
I am a traditionalist with a belief in the correct planning & preparation applied with a practical & pragmatic approach.
I am enthralled by the development of a project over 2 or 3 seasons.
I believe it is important for designers to keep their practical skills well honed & to this end I am very much hands on when translating one of my plans from paper to reality. I enjoy getting my hands dirty with no fear of pruning, weeding & general maintenance as a new garden develops over its first season.
A lot of my work is influenced by the Arts & Crafts Movement, of which I am a great lover.
